The Beveridge-Nelson decomposition: A different perspective with new results

چکیده
We show in the paper that the decomposition proposed by Beveridge and Nelson for models that are integrated of order one can be generalized to seasonal Arima models by means of a partial fraction decomposition Two equiv alent algorithms are proposed to optimally in the mean squared sense compute the estimates of the components in the generalized decomposition While the rst algorithm is very fast and easy to implement the second can also provide the standard errors of the estimated components The properties of the implied l ters are investigated and compared with those obtained using the model based Tramo Seats software package The alternative methods are applied to the German unemployment series A part of the research for this paper was carried out within Sonderforschungsbereich at the Humboldt University Berlin and was printed using funds made available by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft

The Multistep Beveridge-Nelson Decomposition
The Beveridge-Nelson decomposition defines the trend component in terms of the eventual forecast function, as the value the series would take if it were on its long-run path. The paper introduces the multistep Beveridge-Nelson decomposition, which arises when the forecast function is obtained by the direct autoregressive approach, which optimizes the predictive ability of the AR model at foreca...
متن کاملThe Two Interpretations of the Beveridge–nelson Decomposition
The Beveridge–Nelson decomposition calculates trend and cycle for an integrated time series. However, there are two ways to interpret the results from the decomposition. One interpretation is that the optimal long-run forecast (minus any deterministic drift) used to calculate the Beveridge–Nelson trend corresponds to an estimate of an unobserved permanent component. The other interpretation is ...

A state–space approach provides a general unified framework for calculation of the Beveridge–Nelson decomposition for a wide variety of time series models, including all univariate and vector ARIMA models. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملMeasuring the Natural Rates, Gaps, and Deviation Cycles∗
The natural rate is the equilibrium rate under flexible prices, and the gap is the difference between the actual and natural rates. Since prices adjust eventually, the Beveridge–Nelson (B–N) decomposition gives the statistical counterparts of the two notions. Measuring cycles in the gap is of interest from the new neoclassical synthesis perspective. The Bayesian multivariate B–N decomposition g...
متن کاملA Steady-State Approach to Trend/Cycle Decomposition
In this paper, we present a new approach to trend/cycle decomposition. The trend of an integrated time series is estimated using the conditional expectation of the steady-state level of the series. Given a nonlinear forecasting model, this steady-state approach can differ in important ways from the related long-horizon forecast decomposition proposed by Beveridge and Nelson (1981). We use gener...
